Understanding Menopause: Dealing With “the Change”

As women age, they go through many changes at different periods. One of those changes, and the most noticeable in the later ages, is that of menopause.

What is menopause?

Menopause is a change that occurs in the body during which menstrual periods stop and women are no longer able to get pregnant. This transitional period may occur over the course of many months and years, and includes times known as perimenopause. During this time, the levels of hormones in the body change, especially that of progesterone and estrogen. These low levels of hormones can cause symptoms which may include:

  • Lowered sex drive
  • Hot flashes
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Irregular bleeding/periods
  • Memory and concentration problems
  • Increased anxiety and depression
  • Urinary problems
  • Mood changes
  • Vaginal infection

How to deal with the changes during menopause

Many women are bothered by the symptoms of “going through the change.” They can greatly impact one’s overall health and wellness, as well as cause them embarrassment. It is important for women going through perimenopause and menopause to speak to a professional about the symptoms they are struggling with and ask that provider about solutions that can help. While this change is a natural process, it can be bothersome in many areas of a woman’s life.

Treatments available during menopause

In most cases, women will benefit from hormone replacement therapy. During menopause, the hormones are often thrown out of their usual balance. This is what results in many troublesome symptoms. Women are welcome to speak to their doctor about hormone replacement therapy, where progesterone and estrogen levels can be restored and brought back in balance to reduce or even eliminate the problematic symptoms that can arise during this time.
