How Can I Treat PCOS?

Nothing could be more complicated than the human body, it seems. When things work well, we may not even notice our body. But, when things are abnormal or we’re in pain, our bodies can suddenly take up our brain power. PCOS, or polycystic ovary syndrome, can impact fertility and disrupt your hormones, even leading to stubborn acne and other troublesome symptoms. Keep reading to learn more about PCOS and what you can do about it.

What is PCOS?

PCOS is a hormone-disrupting issue that causes a woman’s body to produce high levels of androgens. Though you may think that androgens are male hormones, the truth is that women do have them, too, just in smaller amounts. Extremely high androgen levels in women interfere with the development of your eggs and your cycle, which means that PCOS can lead to an unpredictable period, or even missed periods altogether.

How does it affect fertility?

High androgen levels caused by PCOS impact how your eggs develop. Let’s say you miss your period due to PCOS. That means that a healthy egg was never released. And, if an egg isn’t released, it can’t get fertilized and start growing as your child. PCOS can lead you to miss your period or experience irregular periods, which makes it hard for you to track when you’re ovulating

How can I treat it?

Gaining a lot of weight can affect your hormone levels negatively. So, losing weight (only for those who are overweight or obese), may help adjust your hormone levels. In general, though, you can make better lifestyle choices to increase fertility as well.

If you’re trying to get pregnant, certain medications may help regulate your hormones and get you to a place where you can become pregnant. If your period isn’t regular, or you’ve already been diagnosed with PCOS, work closely with your doctor to see what you can do about it and how you can manage your hormones.
