There are times when non-invasive procedures and medication cannot relieve the symptoms associated with gynecological problems, and surgery is the only effective form of treatment available. Some of these gynecological conditions include uterine and cervical cancer, uterine prolapse, endometriosis, menorrhagia or excessive bleeding, and uterine fibroids.
In the past, when surgeons had to perform a hysterectomy or some other form of gynecological procedure, it usually meant making a large incision in the abdomen to gain access to the uterus and surrounding anatomy to perform the operation. For the patient, this usually meant a long stretch of pain and discomfort, as well as extended time away from her normal daily activities, which understandably caused a considerable amount of stress.
These days however, a medical device called the daVinci robot is used in many gynecological procedures, and only involves a series of small, 1 to 2 cm incisions through which surgeons are able to perform complex operations with improved vision, control, dexterity, and precision.
